To inaugurate the IMA’s Green Screen project, which focusses on moving image works with a connection to Queensland, Judy Watson‘s film the names of places will be shown at the IMA during September and October*

the names of places presents research-based mapping of Aboriginal massacre sites across the country. A significant aspect of the project is an invitation extended by Watson to the Australian public to contribute any knowledge of such massacres to be incorporated into a database and website, which will be part of the evolving project. With this project Watson aims to create a space where anybody can contribute their knowledge of massacres of Aboriginal people in Australia, so that the places, names, and details of such events can be retrieved and held as part of our collective consciousness.

Judy Watson is a Brisbane-based Waanyi artist who works across a range of mediums to explore familial, historical, political and environmental aspects of Australian Indigenous heritage and experience.

* Please note: Due to the installation of our next exhibition, IMA Galleries 1 to 4 will not be on view to the public from 10 to 29 October. Judy Watson‘s work will be closed between 10 and 14 October, but will reopen from 15 to 29 October. For this fortnight the IMA Screening Room, Courtyard, and bookshop will be open as usual.
