Public Programs and Learning
The IMA generates opportunities for active engagement with contemporary art. From artist talks, lectures, and symposiums to programs tailored to school, tertiary, and community groups, the IMA gives diverse audiences access to the exciting contemporary art practices of our times. In 2016, we organised over 80 public and learning programs including talks, tours, screenings, workshops and more. Below is a selection of what we currently offer.

Each First Thursday of the month the IMA is open until 9pm, and artists are invited to play host –– creating participatory art experiences through performance, dance, visual art, food, and music.
The IMA are presented by leading Australian and international artists, curators, and writers. Many of them can be later enjoyed as podcasts.
Our 2017 lecture series In Colour looks at the often-neglected topic of colour in contemporary art. A distinguished and diverse line up of speakers explore how and why colour matters, linking it to a variety of issues including race, politics, history, religion, technology, and gender. Our year-long thematic lecture series began in 2015 with What Can Art Institutions Do?, which reflected on the art institution in the 21st century. Last year’s The Artist As…, examined the multitude of roles artists occupy and adapt today.
Saturdays are abuzz at the IMA. Join us for free tours of what’s currently showing, with IMA staff and special guest artists, curators and writers. Each month we hold hands-on workshops, film screenings and fun events for all ages.
School and University Tours
The IMA welcomes visits from schools and universities to the gallery. Free facilitated tours and interpretive resources can be provided upon request. Bookings are recommended, so please visit our bookings request page.
IMA Art Club
Art Club is for art-lovers aged 14–19. Participants get to explore behind-the-scenes of a contemporary art gallery, acquire practical creative skills, program events, and collaborate and develop relationships with like-minded peers, artists, and IMA staff. This program has been developed in dialogue with young people, to keep our space dynamic and to engage with the next generation of creative thinkers. To enquire about the IMA Art Club, please visit our bookings request page.
Please note at times our program may be unsuitable for younger audiences. We encourage our visitors to contact the IMA prior to your visit if in doubt. Please also note that our Saturday programs do not take place between exhibitions.
