Digby Duncan’s iconic documentary Witches and Faggots, Dykes and Poofters (1980) tells the story of the violence and fervour, pride and love, of the first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras on 24 June 1978. Released only two years after the events, the film is a revelatory portrayal of the queer community at the time, detailing the communities’ responses to social oppression and police violence.
