There’s more going on in Queensland art than you might think, but it can be hard to find without a map. Town Hall—a free newspaper, published biannually by the Institute of Modern Art—gathers the brightest and best in Queensland art. Join us for the launch of Town Hall no. 4, which includes profiles on local darlings Mandy Quadrio, Tyza Hart, and Erika Scott; a roundtable on What Does Queer Do?; reflections on the life and work of Jeremy Hynes; and an interview with Olafur Eliasson, in anticipation of his big upcoming show at the Gallery of Modern Art.
To launch the issue, we’re exploring contemporary delivery and rideshare labour in relation to Ayoung Kim’s compelling video work, Delivery Dancer’s Sphere (2022). Following a screening of Ayoung Kim’s video, Giang Nguyen-Thu, media ethnographer and senior lecturer at the University of Queensland, joins IMA’s Assistant Director Odette Miller to examine lived realities in Asia behind Kim’s speculative vision. The conversation will draw on Nguyen-Thu’s research with delivery drivers in Vietnam, contextualising Kim’s exploration of body and time optimisation within the experiences of contemporary gig workers. This unique dialogue connects artistic speculation with social research, revealing the human stories within our accelerated economy.
Following the screening and discussion, join us at 4pm for a live performance of Max Athans‘s Breath Song.
