In conjunction with an exhibition of work by Cuban American artist Ana Mendieta at the IMA, guest curator Professor Susan Best presents a talk titled Ana Mendieta’s emotional ties. Best’s talk will centre on the Silueta series—considered Mendieta’s most important work—and consider the artist’s ideas about an emotional connection to the earth.

Ana Mendieta: Connecting to the Earth brings together two series of works by the artist (1948-1985) that are about connection to land. Rarely considered together, the Silueta series and the Rupestrian Sculpture series powerfully demonstrate Mendieta’s idea of feminised nature.

Connecting to the Earth is the first solo exhibition of the artist’s work in Australia and is guest curated by Professor Susan Best, Deputy Director (Research & Postgraduate), Queensland College of Art, Griffith University.

The Institute of Modern Art acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land upon which the IMA now stands, the Jagera, Yuggera, Yugarapul, and Turrbal people. We offer our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first artists of this country. In the spirit of allyship, the IMA will continue to work with First Nations people to celebrate, support, and present their immense past, present, and future contribution to artistic practice and cultural expression.
