Celebrate the opening of Quarter Three with a major new solo exhibition by acclaimed Canadian artist Jon Rafman, Memento Hikikomori. Rafman’s approach is exploratory and anthropological, scraping the recesses of the internet as he charts the dark heart of the digital world. Memento Hikikomori brings together works that contend with the technological mediation of memory, the formation of selfhood and identity, and the unconscious of collective online experience.
In the IMA’s screening room Ho Rui An’s video Ultimate Coin Test China High-Speed Rail (2018) offers a playful critique of China’s rapid modernisation and the appeal of stability within the chaos of late capitalism. Ho appropriates a viral internet phenomenon, in which passengers on Chinese bullet trains film coins standing perfectly upright on their edges at speeds exceeding 300km/h, proving the incredible smoothness and engineering stability of China’s rail network.
