In 2015, to celebrate its 40th Anniversary, the IMA launched its first black tie Gala. Three years on, the event has become a national leader in contemporary art fundraising and one of Brisbane’s most glamorous winter events. This year’s Fourth Annual Gala will be bigger and better than ever, helping even more artists realise transformative new projects. Each year the IMA’s Annual Gala is held in honour of a leading Australian artist, academic, or curator for their role in shaping the Australian contemporary art landscape as well as their connection to the organisation’s past. In 2018, the IMA is delighted to be honouring one of Australia’s most prolific artist’s, Richard Bell.

The Institute of Modern Art acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land upon which the IMA now stands, the Jagera, Yuggera, Yugarapul, and Turrbal people. We offer our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first artists of this country. In the spirit of allyship, the IMA will continue to work with First Nations people to celebrate, support, and present their immense past, present, and future contribution to artistic practice and cultural expression.
