What makes an architectural culture? Where is this architectural culture made? Where does it belong?

In a setting with no insulation, no zoning, no floor finishes, and no OH&S, Garage Papers set out to reclaim architecture as a hobby—as something fun. Rather than ‘critique’, their efforts were grounded by interest, passion, and dedication. They did it in a garage and have now expanded their remit to publishing a quarterly journal, Garage Papers.

Andrew Murray is a research fellow in architectural history at the University of Melbourne. Upon completion of his PhD in 2023, he worked as a caseworker for the Twentieth Century Society in London and is the current vice-president of DOCOMOMO Australia.

Kate Finning is an architect practising in Melbourne. Kate is a graduate of the Architectural Association London and current Studio leader in the Master of Architecture program at The University of Melbourne. Kate co-edited the publication Five Good Swiss Plans (Quart, 2025) with Guillermo Fernandez-Abascal.

Jean-Marc Tang is an architectural assistant at NMBW in Melbourne and one half of davulyte.tang. He was the 2023 Boas Scholar at the British School at Rome during his study at the University of Cambridge. He teaches, researches, and writes on and around the early modern period.
