IMA at Gwangju Biennale

2 August 2016

IMA Directors Aileen Burns and Johan Lundh, and IMA Senior Manager Madeleine King will travel to Korea in late August for the 11th Gwangju Biennale, where the Institute of Modern Art has been selected as a Biennale Fellow.

Roughly one hundred small- and medium-scale art organisations from around the world ‘whose work makes important contributions to the art of today’ have been recognised in this way. The IMA is the only Biennale Fellow from Australia.

According to Gwangju Biennale Director Maria Lind and curator Binna Choi, the chosen Fellows are, ‘organisations [that] often function as the research and development department of the art world, generating new ideas and shaping new curatorial and educational methods. Above all, they actively support artists to experiment and cultivate their practices and nurture contact and conflict zones around themselves, including neighbours and various practitioners from other fields.’

IMA exhibiting artists Nicholas Mangan and Dale Harding are among the Australian participants. The IMA will also co-produce a work by artist Céline Condorelli for the Biennale with the support of the Keir Foundation.

The Institute of Modern Art acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land upon which the IMA now stands, the Jagera, Yuggera, Yugarapul, and Turrbal people. We offer our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first artists of this country. In the spirit of allyship, the IMA will continue to work with First Nations people to celebrate, support, and present their immense past, present, and future contribution to artistic practice and cultural expression.
