'the churchie' call for entries

Opens 10 May 2021

16 April 2021

The churchie emerging art prize returns to the Institute of Modern Art for the third year, showcasing work by Australia’s best emerging artistic talent and offering a prize pool of $25,000.

The call for entries will open for six weeks, 10 May–20 June 2021. Artists of all ages and disciplines who identify as early career and are Australian citizens or residents are invited to apply. Applicants will be assessed based on the strength of their practice as a whole.

Selected finalists will work with a guest curator, who will curate the exhibition and support artists to present their work at the IMA. All finalists will receive artist fees and freight support, encouraging the sustainability of emerging art practices.

The Major Prize winner will receive a $15,000 non-acquisitive cash prize provided by long-standing sponsor BSPN Architecture. A Special Commendation Prize of $5,000 is sponsored by Fardoulys Constructions, as well as two $1,000 Commendation Prizes sponsored by Madison Cleaning Services. A People’s Choice Award of $3,000, also sponsored by Madison Cleaning Services, will be awarded at the conclusion of the finalists’ exhibition.

The finalists’ exhibition will be on view at the IMA, Brisbane 9 October–18 December 2021.

The Institute of Modern Art acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land upon which the IMA now stands, the Jagera, Yuggera, Yugarapul, and Turrbal people. We offer our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first artists of this country. In the spirit of allyship, the IMA will continue to work with First Nations people to celebrate, support, and present their immense past, present, and future contribution to artistic practice and cultural expression.
