The Ascended

2023

Eds.: Naomi Evans

Publisher: Griffith Art Museum

128 Pages

Born in Aotearoa/New Zealand, Chantal Fraser is a Brisbane-based Samoan artist who has witnessed and participated in widening Australia’s conception of what the Asia Pacific might mean, or how art made by artists from the Great Ocean regions might be understood. She brings incisive perspectives to global contemporary art and offers a worldview that includes and values culture and its sub-cultures.

In 2023 Griffith University Art Museum hosted Chantal Fraser: The Ascended, the artist’s first solo exhibition in an Australian public institution. The publication Chantal Fraser: The Ascended is the first monograph of Fraser’s career. Inside you can find full-colour reproductions of new and retrospective artworks to consider Fraser’s contribution to contemporary Australian art. It includes essays by exhibition curator Naomi Evans and Dr Lana Lopesi (MNZM), commissioned poetry by Brian Fuata and an artist interview by Shuddhabrata Sengupta (Raqs Media Collective).
