Robert MacPherson Nominal Gestures
Robert MacPherson was one of Australia’s most respected senior contemporary artists and his work continues to surprise and enchant viewers. ‘Nominal Gestures’ explores MacPherson’s fascination with wordplay and modes of classification, and incorporates objects from the artist’s personal collection such as a collection of water divining tools used in the practice of dowsing or ‘water witching’ to locate groundwater. These are individually dedicated to figures from MacPherson’s personal history. Also included is “PELICAN DREAMING: 18 FROG POEMS, FOR GREG C.” 1984-2020, a major installation conceived by MacPherson in 1984 and realised at Griffith University Art Museum for the first time.
