American Norman Westberg’s guitar playing with the legendary ensemble Swans has influenced a generation of musicians across genres. Creating tightly bound slabs of sound, he is recognised as one of New York’s most provocative and focused guitarists. His solo work also charts an uncompromising path, albeit aesthetically remote from the rigid structure of Swans. Across a number of recently reissued editions, including the lauded 13 and MRI, Westberg’s compositions dwell in echoing universes of deep texture and harmonic intensity. His solo works’ affecting quality drives the listener towards reductive transcendence.
Westerberg presents his first solo concert outside North America for Mono. Joining him is An Infinity Room, the spatial drone project of Australian artist Julian Day.
Mono is the IMA’s longstanding program of experimental sound curated by Lawrence English of Room40. Experience the expansive world of sonic experimentation and boundary-pushing performance in Brisbane/Meanjin through an integration of diverse sound materials and practices.
