Tay Haggarty announced as recipient of the Jeremy Hynes Award
25 November 2019
Since 2009, the IMA has had the honour of presenting the biennial Jeremy Hynes Award to a risk-taking Queensland artist in the early stages of their career. The Award was made possible through a bequest made by his family in his name. At the IMA Annual Party on Saturday we were thrilled to announce the recipient of the sixth Award—Meanjin/Brisbane-based artist Tay Haggarty. Haggarty was selected by judges Justene Williams, Tony Albert, and IMA Director Liz Nowell from a strong pool of submissions. Nowell says, ‘Haggarty’s bold sculptural installations and performances capture the spirit of Hynes’s practice, and demonstrate ambition and a commitment to risk taking.’ Haggarty joins an alumni of outstanding Jeremy Hynes Award recipients including Lu Forsberg, Liam O’Brien, and Chris Howlett. Haggarty will be awarded $10,000 and will receive mentorship to produce a solo exhibition at the IMA in 2020.
