Event Town Hall

Town Hall

Launch

21 April 2024
1.00PM–3.00PM

Join us for the launch of our new publishing project Town Hall, a newspaper about Queensland art. With previews and profiles, op eds and interviews, news and a quiz, Town Hall is a thirty-two-page deep dive into all there is to see and know.

For the first issue, we explore Queensland’s presence at 2024 Venice Biennale, speaking to artist Archie Moore and curator Ellie Buttrose, and to artist-curator Taloi HaviniAdam Ford explores what brings controversial Indonesian collective Taring Padi and proppaNOW together for their new cross-cultural collaboration. Shannon Brett speaks to Judy Watson about her forty-year-long practice reflecting on sovereignty and place. And much more.

For the launch, we present a panel discussion on the question ‘Why write about art?’ The art business is awash with words, with statements and didactics, criticism and comms. But what do words add? Join Amelia Barikin (Senior Lecturer, Art History, University of Queensland), Adam Ford (Assistant Curator, Indigenous Australian Art, Queensland Art Gallery), and Helen Hughes (Discipline) as they answer the obvious question.

The Institute of Modern Art acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land upon which the IMA now stands, the Jagera, Yuggera, Yugarapul, and Turrbal people. We offer our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first artists of this country. In the spirit of allyship, the IMA will continue to work with First Nations people to celebrate, support, and present their immense past, present, and future contribution to artistic practice and cultural expression.
