Free Range 5
Ryosuke Kiyasu, Brisbane Conduction Orchestra, Girls on Drugs
12 September 2025
6-9pm
Free Range, sunny side up. Loosen up with the IMA’s sound club.
Ryosuke Kiyasu: Extreme, dynamic, avant-garde. A pioneering snare-drum soloist from Japan, Kiyasu has been redefining percussion since 2003. With two hundred-plus releases spanning solo work and band discographies, Kiyasu continues to tour globally, delivering a singular, banging blend that has made the snare drum a headline instrument. Expect thunderous blows and neighbourhood noise complaints.
Brisbane Conduction Orchestra: Formed in 2017 by Benjamin Shannon, this orchestra is improvised. Taking inspiration from Anthony Braxton and Lawrence ‘Butch’ Morris’ free form ‘conduction’, both the sonic and gestural possibilities are endless. Harmony, melody, tempo, progression and/or articulation will be squeezed and manipulated. Through the maestro’s handy-work pitch, timbre, and duration will be scrambled in real time.
Girls on Drugs: Ever-evolving and unrolling, this collaborative project between Meanjin experimentalists Yvette Ofa Agapow and Oscar Keating follows a cyclic process of musical fellowship. Working together and counteracting against. This duo will seesaw, finding harmony amidst instrumental breaking points.
Doors at 6pm.
