Join Nicholas Aloisio-Shearer, curator of Jon Rafman: Memento Hikikomori, as he guides us through the exhibition and deconstructs the anthropological approach of Canadian artist Jon Rafman, who scrapes the recesses of the internet, mines 4chan greentexts, strips images from video games, and documents fringe online communities.

Aloisio-Shearer will contextualise the central works, which include Rafman’s ongoing project Nine Eyes (2008–), his feature-length video work Main Stream Media Network (2025–6), and shorter films, Punctured Sky (2021), Still Life (Betamale) (2013), and Kool-Aid Man in Second Life (2008–11) — all of which contend with the technological mediation of memory, the formation of selfhood and identity, and the unconscious of collective online experience.

The Institute of Modern Art acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land upon which the IMA now stands, the Jagera, Yuggera, Yugarapul, and Turrbal people. We offer our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first artists of this country. In the spirit of allyship, the IMA will continue to work with First Nations people to celebrate, support, and present their immense past, present, and future contribution to artistic practice and cultural expression.
