Event Ikebana Demonstration

Ikebana Demonstration

with Lily Karmatz

14 May 2022
11am–12pm

Join Lily Karmatz, an experienced practicing Ikebana teacher and visual artist, as she demonstrates how to create Ikebana arrangements using natural materials found in the landscape.

Ikebana is the ancient art of Japanese flower arranging, which takes on particular significance today as the world becomes more environmentally aware. While Ikebana may seem like a casual craft, there are in fact guiding rules based on design principles and centuries of keen observations of nature by the Ikebana masters. The Japanese perception of beauty is largely based on space, lines and forms, colour and texture, as it is found in nature. For Karmatz “Ikebana as an expressive art form is a disciplined combination of natural elements, human creativity, and the constant perfecting of technique.”

Karmatz will demonstrate how to create an arrangement using different ceramic and glass containers.

Ticket price include morning tea. Attendees will be offered a special 10% discount for all glass and ceramic vases in the IMA Gallery Shop.
