An Act of Showing: Rethinking Artist-Run Initiatives through Place

Book launch

28 February 2019
6–8pm

Celebrate the Meanjin/Brisbane launch of An Act of Showing: Rethinking Artist-Run Initiatives through Place. Members of South East Queensland ARIs—Aishla Manning (The Laundry Artspace), Rebecca Ross (The Walls), Danni Zuvela (Liquid Architecture, Other Film, The Walls), and Simone Hine and Kyle Weise (Kuiper Projects, ScreenSpace, Beam Contemporary, MetroArts)—join the editors Maria Miranda and Anabelle Lacroix to discuss the relevance of place to ARIs.

An Act of Showing accompanies and expands upon the eponymous exhibition and roundtable symposium held at Testing Grounds, Naarm/Melbourne, in May 2017. The book features commissioned essays by Paola Balla, Kirsten Lyttle, and Dominic Redfern, Chris Kraus’s ‘Kelly Lake Store’, and creative contributions by ARIs from Australia and the Asia Pacific. It was designed by Elwyn Murray and published by Unlikely Publishing, Naarm/Melbourne. It will be available in Queensland for the first time at our Gallery Shop.

Event Podcast

The Institute of Modern Art acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land upon which the IMA now stands, the Jagera, Yuggera, Yugarapul, and Turrbal people. We offer our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first artists of this country. In the spirit of allyship, the IMA will continue to work with First Nations people to celebrate, support, and present their immense past, present, and future contribution to artistic practice and cultural expression.
