Celebrate the Brisbane launch of An Act of Showing: rethinking artist-run initiatives through place with publication co-editors Maria Miranda and Anabelle Lacroix, joined in conversation with members of artist-run initiatives (ARIs) in South East Queensland. An Act of Showing accompanies and expands upon the eponymous exhibition and roundtable symposium held at Testing Grounds, Melbourne in May 2017.

It discusses artist-run initiatives in Australia—now well recognised as important spaces to show work, meet other artists and audiences, and to continue engaging in questions around art practice and philosophies of art. The book features newly commissioned essays by Paola Balla, Kirsten Lyttle, and Dominic Redfern, as well as Chris Kraus’s Kelly Lake Store, and creative contributions by ARIs from Australia and the Asia-Pacific. For this special launch event the editors are joined by Aishla Manning (The Laundry Artspace), Rebecca Ross (The Walls), Danni Zuvela (Liquid Architecture, Other Film, The Walls), and Simone Hine and Kyle Weise (Kuiper Projects, ScreenSpace, Beam Contemporary, Metro Arts), to discuss the relevance of place for ARIs as well as responsiveness, cross-pollination, institutionalisation, and legacies. An Act of Showing, designed by Elwyn Murray and published by Unlikely Publishing, Melbourne, will be available in Queensland for the first time at the IMA Gallery Shop.
