Join us to celebrate the opening of the IMA’s Quarter Four program. Mitch Cairns: Artist’s Mouth is a major survey of work by the Gadigal/Sydney-based painter. It’s a joint project with NAS Gallery, Gadigal/Sydney, and has been curated by NAS Curator Exhibitions Lucy Latella and IMA Director Robert Leonard. Spanning two decades, it traces Cairns’s evolution from student work to now, reflecting his ongoing engagement with the poetics of daily life, comics, cubism, and concrete poetry. It is the largest, most comprehensive presentation of his work to date. It’s accompanied by two video works by British artist Kate Cooper in the Screening Room: Infection Drivers (2018) and Untitled (After Somatic Aliasing) (2022).

The Institute of Modern Art acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land upon which the IMA now stands, the Jagera, Yuggera, Yugarapul, and Turrbal people. We offer our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first artists of this country. In the spirit of allyship, the IMA will continue to work with First Nations people to celebrate, support, and present their immense past, present, and future contribution to artistic practice and cultural expression.
