American Norman Westberg’s guitar playing with the legendary ensemble Swans has influenced a generation of musicians across genres. Creating tightly bound slabs of sound, he is recognised as one of New York’s most provocative and focused guitarists. His solo work also charts an uncompromising path, albeit aesthetically remote from the rigid structure of Swans. Across a number of recently reissued editions, including the lauded 13 and MRI, Westberg’s compositions dwell in echoing universes of deep texture and harmonic intensity. His solo works’ affecting quality drives the listener towards reductive transcendence.

Westerberg presents his first solo concert outside North America for Mono. Joining him is An Infinity Room, the spatial drone project of Australian artist Julian Day.

Mono is a sound program curated by Lawrence English.

The Institute of Modern Art acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land upon which the IMA now stands, the Jagera, Yuggera, Yugarapul, and Turrbal people. We offer our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first artists of this country. In the spirit of allyship, the IMA will continue to work with First Nations people to celebrate, support, and present their immense past, present, and future contribution to artistic practice and cultural expression.
