IMA, Liquid Architecture, and Perimeter Books present the Brisbane book launch of Ambient Park, the brand new publication by French multidisciplinary artist Félicia Atkinson, co-published by Perimeter Editions, and Shelter Press. Atkinson founded Shelter Press with Bartolomé Sanson in 2011, and it has since become an internationally regarded French publishing house, record label and curatorial platform.

Ricocheting quietly between photographic landscapes, drawn abstractions and poetic recollections, Ambient Park assumes the form of a deferred performance. Serving as a kind of response to the artist’s recent sonic and visual output, the book comprises a series of film stills shot during her travels to New Mexico and Arizona, overlaid with a collection of at once crude and delicate drawings made in Australia. The works navigate a path across real lands, negative spaces and psychic topographies.

As part of the launch, Atkinson and Sanson will deliver a talk about Shelter Press—a personal and creative endeavour that the pair have described as “a nomadic artist-run organisation building up dialogues between contemporary art, poetry and experimental music through publications, pedagogical experiences and exhibitions”.

The Institute of Modern Art acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land upon which the IMA now stands, the Jagera, Yuggera, Yugarapul, and Turrbal people. We offer our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first artists of this country. In the spirit of allyship, the IMA will continue to work with First Nations people to celebrate, support, and present their immense past, present, and future contribution to artistic practice and cultural expression.
