Architect Kevin O’Brien (Kaurereg, Meriam) discusses the conflict between Country and architecture, and explores the opportunities which remain ahead.

The gallery entrance is on the ground floor of the Judith Wright Arts Centre, on Berwick Street. There is wheelchair access and an accessible toilet with baby changing facilities also located on the ground floor, and we welcome guide and support dogs.

  • Kevin O’Brien is a Brisbane-based architect of Kaurereg and Meriam heritage. In 2018, he joined BVN Architecture as a Principal working on large scale projects throughout Australia. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the School of Architecture, University of Sydney. Kevin is committed to the pursuit of projects that seek to locate people in settings connected to the concept of Country. This reflects a passion for culture that informs a way into the built environment and extends into collaborations assisting artists in the visual and performing arts. He has produced set designs for Queensland Theatre Company, La Boite Theatre and Moogahlin Performing Arts, and installations for Urban Theatre Projects (UTP), Bleach Festival, the Sydney Festival, IMA and QAGOMA. He is currently assisting as exhibition designer for Archie Moore’s KIN exhibition curated by Ellie Buttrose for the 2024 Venice Arts Biennale.
