Jeremy Hynes Award

Since 2009, the IMA has had the honour of presenting the Jeremy Hynes Award to experimental Queensland artists, from a bequest made by the late experimental artist’s family in his name.

We are calling for applications from experimental Queensland artists (individuals or collectives) for the eighth and final instalment of the award. The recipient will be given $10,000 to produce an exhibition or project at the IMA in 2025.

Here, we understand Queensland artists to mean artists who were born here, live here, or have lived here. By experimental, we mean artists operating outside the white-cube context, who explore new media, who are interdisciplinary, and who embrace risk. There is no age restriction.

We are seeking applications which demonstrate experimentation, artistic courage, and clarity of idea, and are scoped to the funds available.

Applications should be made via the submission form before Sunday 23 June 2024.

The Institute of Modern Art acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land upon which the IMA now stands, the Jagera, Yuggera, Yugarapul, and Turrbal people. We offer our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first artists of this country. In the spirit of allyship, the IMA will continue to work with First Nations people to celebrate, support, and present their immense past, present, and future contribution to artistic practice and cultural expression.
