About the role

The Institute of Modern Art (IMA) is looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and experienced retail manager for the role of Gallery Shop and Front of House Manager. This is a fantastic opportunity for a candidate with a retail background who is interested in shaping the experience of visitors to the gallery.

The Institute of Modern Art is entering an exciting period of growth. The Gallery Shop Manager and Front of House Manager is integral to this success through driving the strategic expansion of the IMA Gallery Shop through in-person and eCommerce activities.

Reporting directly to the Assistant Director Development you will be responsible for the daily running of front of house, overseeing all retail activities, organising and hosting retail events, assisting public programs where required, and supporting the IMA team with general administration.

The workdays of this role are to be negotiated with successful applicant. This is a full-time, five day a week position with regular hours (37.5) between 09:00–18:00 Tuesday to Sunday. The ideal candidate will be available to work one weekend day in addition to four weekdays. Occasional support of after-hours events will be compensated with time off in lieu.

Key working areas

  1. Stock and Suppliers — Actively identifying and procuring shop products such as publications on art, design, art history and critical theory; and art objects from local artisans and makers.
  2. Audience Engagement and Events — Grow the IMA’s audiences through creating an inviting atmosphere, maintaining sales relationships, and hosting Gallery Shop events such as the annual Zine Fair and Maker’s Market to engage with our local community.
  3. Financial Management — Reconciling and reporting on financial activities to meet monthly and annual targets.
  4. Digital Marketing and E-Commerce — Inform the IMA Gallery Shop digital marketing strategy through market research and competitor analysis.
  5. FOH staff and Customer Service — Manage Front of House staff including scheduling, training, and general supervision to ensure all visitors are greeted, sales are correctly processed, and queries are answered.
  6. Visual merchandising and gallery upkeep — Day-to-day management and care of front of house, inclusive of daily opening and closing of the gallery.
