Join us at Stuart Ringholt’s Club Purple for a DJ set with CKDB (a.k.a. artist Chris Bennie) and artist Nicola Morton.*

Chris Bennie makes videos and installations that allegorise seemingly banal subjects such as carparks, caravans, sunsets, tent pegs, bottoms and backs. His artwork has been included in + Plus Factors, Australian Centre of Contemporary Art, Melbourne (2006); The Biennale of Sydney: Revolutions – Forms That Turn (2008); Contemporary Australia: Optimism, Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane (2008); and The National Artists Self Portrait Prize, University of Queensland Art Museum, Brisbane (2013).

Chris has DJ’d in forests, fields, clubs and exhibitions in New Zealand and Australia, including The Gathering, Takaka (1996); Temperature 2, Museum of Brisbane (2008); Institute of Modern Art Christmas Party, Brisbane (2011); and Living Synthetic, Brisbane (2013). He is the recipient of the 2012 Gold Coast Art Award; the 2013 Swell Sculpture Festival Award; a 2013 Australia Council for the Arts New Work grant (mid-career); and a 2013 Regional Arts Development Fund grant. In 2014 Chris will research tsunami-affected communities and objects in Japan as part of an Asialink Residency Laboratory at Youkobo Art Space.

Nicola Morton is an Asian-Australian artist who plays with machines and the paranormal. When she was young, she would dream that she was a steam train. She has a B.Music (Technology) from the Qld Conservatorium of Music (2003). Utilising DIY, pseudo-scientific and/or shamanic practice to accomplish cross-disciplinary exchange is key to her work and she has held psychic séances, psychedelic performances, and explored psychological deaths with artists, musicians, architects, composers and writers from Australia, Japan, Indonesia, USA, Canada, UK, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Faroe Islands, and Latvia, culminating in a short-listing by the 17th VideoBrasil Exhibition for her psychic video project, Remote Viewing Experiment #1. Her performance work and facilitation (encompassing music and visual art) has received significant support in the form of independent review in Art & Australia, Realtime, Crawlspace, The Wire, and Pipeline; plus awards and grants from QMusic, Asialink, Brisbane City Council, Renew Newcastle and Ptarmigan. She is a co-director at EXIST ARI and REAL BAD MUSIC and continues to explore parapsychology in post-internet times in her postgraduate research with Joyce Hinterding.

*This event will be conducted in the nude.
