In this special evening of performances, Room40 and the IMA invite you to experience the ‘maximal minimalism’ of four internationally renowned artists at theJudith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts performance space.

For one night only in Brisbane, see performances by Stephen O’Malley, known by many as a founding member of experimental metal band Sunn O))), Vanessa Tomlinson who will perform a work for solo gong, Rafael Anton Irisarri, the New York-based maestro of dense ambience, and the much-hailed tone sculptor Loscil from Canada.

  • Rafael Anton Irisarri is a multi-instrumentalist, record producer, mastering engineer, and curator living in New York. Described by Drowned In Sound (UK) as “one of contemporary ambient music’s most celebrated practitioners”, Irisarri’s works are widely published internationally, made available through respected and influential labels like Ghostly (USA), Morr Music (DE), Room40 (AU), and Umor Rex (MX), among others.

    Loscil is the electronic/ambient music project of Scott Morgan, from Vancouver, Canada. The name Loscil is taken from the “looping oscillator” function in Csound. Scott Morgan was also the drummer for the Vancouver indie band Destroyer.

    Vanessa Tomlinson is an Australian improviser, artist, musician, composer, sound artist, and educator who studied improvisation under the guidance of innovative improvisor George Lewis. She is known for her work as part of Clocked Out Duo.

    Paris-based Stephen O’Malley is a founding member of several groups including Thorr’s Hammer (1993), Burning Witch (1995), Sunn O))) (1998), Khanate (2000), KTL (2005), Nazoranai (2011), ÄÄNIPÄÄ (2011) and others.  He is a frequent collaborator of many musicians, artists, and composers in various formations, in projects inside and out of concert, exhibition, gallery, and studio settings.
