What if cities could walk? What if buildings could plug in and out like appliances?

Emerging in the 1960s, two collectives of paper architects responded to the pop-art, space-age zeitgeist. Archigram and Superstudio imagined speculative futures for architecture typified by high-tech megastructures, disseminating their ideas through proposals, exhibitions, publications, and films.

Join us for a conversation led by Andrew Wilson (University of Queensland), featuring Alex Brown (Monash University), Andrew Leach (Queensland University of Technology), and Nicole Sully (University of Queensland). Our panel will dissect the remaining artefacts of these two groups, exploring what was at stake for the radical architecture movement, and what endures today.

Following the discussion, we’ll screen a selection of Archigram and Superstudio’s short films on the big screen.

Registration essential.

Off Grid is a series of architecture discussions led by Andrew Wilson, Senior Lecturer in Architecture at University of Queensland, and Andrew Leach, Professor of Architectural History at Queensland University of Technology, both Meanjin/Brisbane.

The Institute of Modern Art acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land upon which the IMA now stands, the Jagera, Yuggera, Yugarapul, and Turrbal people. We offer our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first artists of this country. In the spirit of allyship, the IMA will continue to work with First Nations people to celebrate, support, and present their immense past, present, and future contribution to artistic practice and cultural expression.
