Room40—an experimental label run by composer, artist, and curator Lawrence English—has published over 150 editions from artists spanning the globe. This year, the label celebrates its fifteen year with its 15 series. On Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 August, the IMA will host two exclusive sideshows for Room40’s Open Frame festival at Carriageworks in Sydney, featuring William Basinski (USA), Hypnosis Display (Grouper and Paul Clipson, USA), Makino Takashi (Japan), and Ross Manning (Brisbane). Room40 has also commissioned a world-premiere diffusion composition for Open Frame by Jim O’Rourke (USA/Japan), which will be presented on his behalf by English. These events are made possible with support from Brisbane City Council Creative Sparks and Australia Council for the Arts.

Mono is the IMA’s longstanding program of experimental sound curated by Lawrence English of Room40. Experience the expansive world of sonic experimentation and boundary-pushing performance in Brisbane/Meanjin through an integration of diverse sound materials and practices.

The Institute of Modern Art acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land upon which the IMA now stands, the Jagera, Yuggera, Yugarapul, and Turrbal people. We offer our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first artists of this country. In the spirit of allyship, the IMA will continue to work with First Nations people to celebrate, support, and present their immense past, present, and future contribution to artistic practice and cultural expression.
