Max Athans: Breath Song

Performance

20 September 2025
4–5pm

Experience an innovative musical dialogue as Max Athans and Woojin Kim respond to the sculpture Dogwhistle, in Athans’s current exhibition Breathform. Athans and Kim will use face-mounted whistles, acoustic guitar, and intricate live-feedback loops to create an immersive sonic environment that layers rhythmic breathing patterns. Dogwhistle will become an active participant, as the trio form an impromptu band exploring the intimate relationship between body, breath, and artistic expression.

Breath Song follows the launch of Town Hall no. 4, featuring a conversation between media ethnographer Giang Nguyen-Thu and IMA Assistant Director Odette Miller contextualising our current show Ayoung Kim: Delivery Dancer’s Sphere.

The Institute of Modern Art acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land upon which the IMA now stands, the Jagera, Yuggera, Yugarapul, and Turrbal people. We offer our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first artists of this country. In the spirit of allyship, the IMA will continue to work with First Nations people to celebrate, support, and present their immense past, present, and future contribution to artistic practice and cultural expression.
