Max Athans: Breath Song

Performance

20 September 2025
4:00pm

Experience an innovative musical dialogue as artist Max Athans and collaborator Woojin Kim respond to the sculpture Dogwhistle, currently exhibited in Max Athans’ exhibition Breathform.

In this unique collaboration, Athans and Kim will use face-mounted whistles, acoustic guitar, and intricate live feedback loops, to create an immersive sonic environment that extends and layers rhythmic breathing patterns. The sculpture Dogwhistle will become an active participant as the trio form an impromptu ‘band’ who blur the boundaries between breath, sound, and artistic object.

This musical conversation explores the intimate relationship between body, breath, and artistic expression, creating a one-of-a-kind performance that responds directly to the gallery environment and the sculptural work at its centre.

Max Athans: Breath Song follows the IMA’s Town Hall no. 4 Launch, alongside a conversation between the IMA’s Assistant Director, Odette Miller, and media ethnographer, Dr Giang Nguyen-Thu, as they contextualise Ayoung Kim’s video work Delivery Dancer’s Sphere.

The Institute of Modern Art acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land upon which the IMA now stands, the Jagera, Yuggera, Yugarapul, and Turrbal people. We offer our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first artists of this country. In the spirit of allyship, the IMA will continue to work with First Nations people to celebrate, support, and present their immense past, present, and future contribution to artistic practice and cultural expression.
