Iconic genre-blending American experimentalists Xiu Xiu collide synth-fuelled pop, post-punk, and neo-classical experimentalism to create a personal sound world beyond compare. The band’s leader, Jamie Stewart, is responsible for a dynamic songbook that embraces a determined restlessness without fear. Over the last two decades, their prolific influential output of acclaimed albums and collaborations has been dazzling. They have released seventeen full-length LPs that have been praised by The New Yorker, The Wire, Rolling Stone, The Guardian, and NME. Their latest album, 13″ Frank Beltrame Italian Stiletto with Bison Horn Grips, expands their universe of wonderment and uneasy delight. They have toured the globe relentlessly, performing in places as far off the beaten path as Lebanon and Kazakhstan and in such vital institutions such as the Guggenheim and Centre Pompidou. Their work offers a compelling vision of song, noise, and harmonic ferocity.
Xiu Xiu is joined by Brisbane local act, Gorgina, the experimental dance/noise project of Meanjin/Brisbane-based artists Lesbian Merzbow and Yvette Ofa Agapow. Born out of Brisbane’s DIY experimental scene, they parlay their shared love of noise music, female rap, and the schizophrenia of current popular media into a barely intelligible, often comedic sonic collage, sifting through confused notions of romance, sex, trauma, and just being a girl.
