Digby Duncan’s iconic documentary Witches and Faggots, Dykes and Poofters (1980) tells the story of the violence and fervour, pride and love, of the first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras on 24 June 1978. Released two years after the event, the film is a revelatory portrayal of the queer community at the time, detailing its responses to social oppression and police violence. Join us for a rare screening of a keystone of queer Australian history with an introduction by Amelia Barikin, from the Kink collective. Amelia Barikin is Associate Professor in Art History at the School of Communication and Arts, University of Queensland, and a member of the Kink collective. They were previously an ARC Senior Research Associate at the University of Melbourne, and have worked as a curator and editor with various arts institutions.
