Spill (Magda Mayas and Tony Buck) and Vanessa Tomlinson

Mono x CARI

27 June 2023
7.00PM–9.30PM

Mono heads offsite to the Queensland Conservatorium in South Bank to team up with Creative Arts Research Institute (CARI) for a special evening of outer-orbit rhythm and prepared-piano exploration.

As Spill, German pianist Magda Mayas and Australian drummer Tony Buck have created a dynamic and experimental platform for improvisation. Mayas’s work inside the piano is exploratory and reflexive. Her approaches, both in solo and group situations, suggest an unerring curiosity that results in a profoundly personal approach to her chosen instrument. The same can be said of Buck, who many will recognise for his longstanding work with the iconic trio The Necks. As a soloist, Buck creates rhythmic environments that shatter notions of tempo, preferring a multifarious sense of time and repetition.

Joining them is composer and percussionist Vanessa Tomlinson. On her album The Space Between, she collected her work for concert bass drum and gong, showcasing her capacity for a complex sense of pulse and rhythmic deepening. For Mono, she pushes further into these terrains, drawing on an expanded palette of sounds to create a divergent examination of pulse, timbre, and temporality.
