It Takes A Village: The IMA Turns Fifty

Announcement

18 June 2025

For fifty years, the IMA has surfed the waves of contemporary art, connecting the local, national, and international, the established and the emergent; and provided a hub for art life in Brisbane.

It’s time to take stock—to chart and celebrate our past achievements and imagine our future.

We’re hosting a series of Saturday celebrations from July into August, combining panel discussions and performances. The first two excavate our past; the third imagines our future. We’ve connected with formative figures from our inception, and invited the next generation of cultural custodians to lend their voices.

Over the decades, you have intersected with us at different points in our adventure. We have lost touch with many of you, and many of you have lost touch with us. We welcome everyone back to celebrate this milestone together.

The Institute of Modern Art acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land upon which the IMA now stands, the Jagera, Yuggera, Yugarapul, and Turrbal people. We offer our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first artists of this country. In the spirit of allyship, the IMA will continue to work with First Nations people to celebrate, support, and present their immense past, present, and future contribution to artistic practice and cultural expression.
