The IMA is pleased to present work by the Brisbane-based duo Catherine or Kate. Catherine or Kate have been collaborating for 8 years. Last year they went to comedy school in Chicago to try to get funnier. The experience was more fraught than they expected and when they got home they stopped using phone and email to contact each other and started writing letters. Catherine or Kate’s presentation is the second of three by artists who have been shortlisted for the 2015 Jeremy Hynes Award, which is given biannually by the IMA to an emerging experimental Queensland artist in honour of the late Jeremy Hynes. This year, the shortlisted artists are Clark Beaumont, Catherine or Kate, and Liam O’Brien. Each of these artists will present an existing work in The Green Room. On the 2nd of December Catherine or Kate presented a live work in the foyer. In addition to this the artists will be showing video work An Occasion (2014) edited by Denny Ryan and a customised dartboard I hate the way I don’t hate you (2014). The Institute of Modern Art acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land upon which the IMA now stands, the Jagera, Yuggera, Yugarapul, and Turrbal people. We offer our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first artists of this country. In the spirit of allyship, the IMA will continue to work with First Nations people to celebrate, support, and present their immense past, present, and future contribution to artistic practice and cultural expression.
