Davida Allen: In The Moment
Davida Allen is known for her strongly gestural painting style that uses heavy brushstrokes and a bold colour palette to explore life as an artist, mother, wife and grandmother; domestic life; family and the human condition. Her works often portray the tension between creative energy and domestic responsibilities.
Both dark and joyful, Allen’s works transcribe complex psychological responses to death, motherhood, suburban life and sexual desire. This publication offers audiences a renewed look at Allen’s work and its relevance to contemporary feminisms and the role of expressionist painting in Australia today. ‘Davida Allen: In the Moment’ includes an extensive curatorial essay by Angela Goddard, Director of Griffith University Art Museum, a fascinating interview with the artist by local writer Louise Martin Chew, and an extensive bibliography and exhibition listing.
