Mike Nelson: Lonely Planet
The year ended with the opening of Mike Nelson’s massive architectural installation, Lonely Planet in which the British artist, well known for his elaborate and ‘real’ constructed environments, converted the spaces of ACCA into a bush nocturne and abandoned dwelling.
Forlorn, and emphasising the emptiness of the Australian bush spaces, Lonely Planet transported the visitor into a world within worlds that was both sinister and special. For some viewers it recalled happy sojourns into places undiscovered, while for others the hastily evacuated spaces and dormant garage conjured up ideas of threat and unease.
